Japanese Prints

In 2007, a survey of Japanese art historians at the Corfu Museum of Asian Art made a major discovery of a rare fan painting by Tôshûsai Sharaku, an 18th century ukiyo-e artist. The fan painting was subsequently shown at a “homecoming exhibition” of masterpieces from the museum at the Edo-Tokyo Metropolitan Museum in 2009, before being shown at a large ukiyo-e print exhibition at the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris in 2011, Huit Maîtres de l’ukiyo-e. The brief for this project consisted of photographing ukiyo-e prints in the collection of the Corfu Museum of Asian Art for the catalogue for the Paris exhibition.
